Evaluating DJ PA Systems

What are DJ PA systems? PA stands for public address; it's audio equipment that will allow you to broadcast in a room or even a large auditorium.

Mobile DJs use PA systems. If you don’t know what a Mobile DJ is, I can describe it to you as a mix of a Battle DJ and a Club DJ; a mobile DJ will travel to any events they will be performing at; a Club DJ only travels to clubs or works for one club.

However, these PA systems are expensive, but it is worth buying them since they last a very long time.

A good PA system is is great for covering many different types of events like parties, wedding receptions, school dances, family occasions and so on.

In case you are going to use your public address system in smaller parties like a school party where you play music for kids to dance, you will want to check out the Kustom KPM8420 PA system.

This is the perfect one to start your career as a Mobile DJ. It has a 400-watt amplifier and includes all the cables you’ll need for the speakers and microphones. By the way, it includes speaker stands in this system too, so it will be perfect for your first gig as a Mobile DJ.

If you want the best and have the money, you must consider the Yamaha EMX5016CF / S115V PA System.

The stereo channel pairs can function either as monaural microphone inputs or stereo line inputs. This system gives you extra microphone inputs if your sources are mostly microphones, or if you need to handle more stereo sources, the EMX5016CF will comfortably handle four pairs in addition to eight mono mic or line inputs.Advanced channel EQ 3-band EQ is available on all input channels, but extra versatility is provided on the eight mono channels...

Don’t forget about the mixers, you will need a good one such as the Mackie 1642-VLZ PRO Mixer (no FX) or the Mackie CFX-16 Mixer (w/FX).

Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer

Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer

The Mackie 1604-VLZ PRO Mixer is a major upgrade for Mackie's already highly respected mixers!

The 1604 improves upon its predecessor with XDR preamps that deliver even lower noise and higher headroom (0-60dB gain range, 130dB dynamic range, +22dBu line input handling, and distortion under .005%). They head up all 16 channels, which also feature high-headroom line inputs and channel inserts.

Other features include a DC pulse transformer for RF rejection, 60mm long-wearing logarithmic-taper faders, 3-band channel EQ with sweepable mids, phantom power, solo switches, balanced inputs/outputs (all except inserts), 4 aux sends, 4 stereo aux returns, 8 direct outs.

It's a flexible, powerful mixer that can serve equally well in PA rack or studio.

Software upgrades and not hardware upgrade for the controller saving you $$$ over the long term.

Built-in limiter prevents over powering the speakers.

Panaray® System Digital Controller (Quantity 1)

Panaray® MB4 Modular Bass Loudspeaker (Quantity 2)

802 Series lll Loudspeakers (Quantity 2)

SS-10 Stands (Quantity 2)

AKG D2200S dynamic microphones(Quantity 2)

So, to sum up, you need several grand to compile the above mentioned system. It’s not cheap, I know, but you will very pleased with the equipment and you won’t have to get any other PA system in the future. Plus, if you ever want to sell it, the system will have a higher resell value.

But don’t forget that it is highly recommended to get good DJ equipment (turntables, mixer, accessories) before you buy a new DJ PA system.

Don’t worry if you don’t have enough money at the moment and can’t buy everything at once, because you can build your DJ PA system gradually over time.
