A Wedding Reception DJ Should be Heard and Not Seen

Ok, the bride and groom have been looking forward to this day for a long time. DJ'ing their wedding may be the only thing you have going that day, but listening to you DJ their wedding is just one of hundreds of things they have going on that day. The DJ is not the center of attention - sometimes. I had the most success when I was out of the way and providing the music. I would only use the mike for specific things that the bride and groom had asked for in advance (dollar dance, garter toss, etc.), other than that, I stayed off it and let the music do the work.

**Webmaster note:
Great point - thanks for bringing that up. The wedding DJ isn't the star of the show. It's good to know in advance what the bride and groom want for their wedding reception entertainment and if they expect you to MC, or just spin.

Bravo! NEW

Couldn't agree more! I've been DJ'ing weddings since the early 80's, and learned this lesson over the years, sometimes the hard way. I mean, I've always known better than to stand up on a table and lead the crowd in the Macarena, but I know that I'm not there to put on a show, I'm there to be part of a show, with the bride and groom as the stars, their bridal party as the supporting characters, and their family and friends as the audience. Me, I'm the guy backstage pulling ropes and throwing switches. Sometimes I'm requested to take a bigger role than that, but not often. It makes me want to puke when I see a DJ taking over a wedding like it's a game show and he's the host. What's even worse, there's a guy like that in the company I work for, and he's supposedly the most popular DJ in the company! But yeah, great policy -- heard, not seen -- and sometimes not even heard.

Your so Right

I've done hundreds of wedding and the one thing that I've always tell the bride and groom is that after the formal part of the wedding receiption (ie: Introduction, special dances)is to let the music do your talking and to stay off the mic.

You nailed it right on the head!

This is a very important fact that can't be ignored. ITS NOT YOUR DAY, ITS THEIR'S. ITs not a radio broadcast, and no one goes to a wedding thinking..."Man I can't wait to hear the DJ talk all night long". Great advise my friend!
