Your Own DJ Business

Running a DJ business is definitely a fun and exciting business to get into, but just as starting any other kind of business, there are a lot of details. Just because you have an extensive music selection and some equipment does not make you an instant DJ.

First, before jumping into this profession, you need to look to yourself. A disc jockey must be entertaining and be able to get the crowd into it as well. Do you have what it takes?

Getting started right will take the right equipment. You need a good public announce (p.a.) system, a high quality mixer, lights, CD player(s), and a good quality microphone. We've made some good suggestions at this site.

As for your music selection, to compete in today's market, you need to get technologically savvy and invest in a laptop with a possible separate mass storage device. This is also much easier to carry than cases and cases of CD’s. Make sure you have a vehicle big enough to carry all your equipment too.

The use of a laptop and a mass storage device for your music has quickly become the way to go. Besides, as mentioned before as the lighter way to go, there’s no need to buy a CD for that one song you can’t find anywhere else. This also eliminates any scratched CD’s ruining your performance or forgetting one that you left at home. Another plus for security reasons you don’t have to watch over your collection like a hawk, everything is in one place and easy to find and search for and play.

Helpful DJ Services

One of the biggest costs of running a business: advertising. This encompasses everything from placement in the phonebook (not our favorite), business cards, newspaper ads, and definitely a website.

Google and the other search engines have made local search really easy, so your DJ business can get found. You can even show off what you can do with video and audio online. It's pretty slick what you can do. Here's the web host we like (because they make it affordable and easy to put up a site that gets found). You can build the site yourself, and you don't have to know any code or much about computers to get started.

Joining a society such as ADJA (American Disc Jockey Association) is another great idea. This is a membership only society for disc jockeys. They are well respected and will convey to potential clients that your service will be honest, ethical, and moral. (Put their logo on your web site when you join and get some credibility!)

ADJA also offers insurance for a DJ business. Disc jockey insurance is a definite must for DJs, not only for the guests but for yourself. Depending on the coverage of the insurance plan, it can cover equipment in transport and personal liability in a lawsuit. Most states actually require a DJ business to cover no less than liability insurance.

Now, it's time to market yourself.

If you're running a DJ business, part-time or full-time, you need a web site. Web sites aren't just for business that sell services globally. They're for businesses that want to attract local customers, too.

The easiest way to get online and promote yourself is with SiteBuildIt!. Using the same tools I used to build this site, you can get online easily, and build a web site to market yourself, to get gigs, and even create new income streams online.

Finally, be sure to list your pro DJ biz on the DJ Tips and Tricks DJ Directory -- it's free for the first 6 months!
