DJs have been a popular form of entertainment for parties, events and around the club scene for decades. Although their popularity has remained constant throughout the years, however, the style and function of a DJ has changed considerably.

DJs are much more than just a hired person to flick on a few vinyls, placed in a far away corner and given a glass of OJ. These days DJs are an integral component of an event and are really employed to set the scene, entertain the guests and maintain the right mood all night long.

Being a DJ is a completely legitimate career opportunity. Disk Jockeys need to be able to communicate, analyze, manage, and entertain all in one. They need to be able to ask the client about the event and put together a package of music, light and sound coupled with entertaining banter that will delight and entrance the guests at the event.

You need to have all of these soft skills, but you also need to have all the right equipment as well. Different DJs who play different types of music and attend different types of functions will naturally need different types of equipment.

A structured event DJ who hosts a regular Friday night gig in a club will want stable equipment that he knows well and has complete control over. Meanwhile, a mobile DJ who works parties, BBQs, weddings, and other major events will want equipment that is durable and portable.

DJs of course need to have music – in vinyl or CD format and the equipment that will play it. But Disk Jockeys can also choose to use other equipment to set the scene and to compliment their music style. This kind of equipment includes lighting, bubble, and fog machines and maybe even video projectors and screens displaying multimedia presentations.

All in all it is up to personal preference and what the clients are demanding time after time. But you should never lose sight of the fact the DJing really is an art form and an all encompassing display of audio coupled with performance and, sometimes, video.
