I've been DJ'ing for about 2 years now. Learning as I go from other DJ's, DJ websites, and definitely videos from youtube.

I STRONGLY recommend that you make a CD of "theme songs". I made a CD with theme songs like "Mission Impossible", "Benny Hill Theme","Axel F" Any decent sounding theme song... put it on that CD, you'll use it more than you think you will.

A great way to not have any deadspace is use upbeat songs on karaoke CDG cd's. If there's no words, you won't hear them complain if you fade it out into another song.
