The Ortofon DJ Stylus Tutorial

If you think your Ortofon DJ stylus is in need of replacement, first check to see if it needs to be cleaned. If that helps, then you don't need to replace it. However, if it still isn't working, follow the easy steps below to install a new stylus on your turntable.

Cleaning the Stylus

First try cleaning the stylus to see if that helps. In order to clean your stylus you will need the following:

- Stylus Cleaning Brush
- 70% Isopropyl Alcohol

Follow the instructions on your cartridge manual if you have it. Be very gentle when you clean the stylus tip.

Dry Cleaning: Using a stylus brush, try dry cleaning it first by brushing the stylus toward you. You will be going in a back to front motion gently on the stylus. Then clean the stabilizer brush if you have one. Use the same back to from motion. Repeat this each time you play a record.

Wet Cleaning: Use a stylus brush or cotton swab and dip it in the alcohol solution for wet cleaning. Use the same back to front motion as you would do with the dry cleaning.

If cleaning the stylus doesn't help, you will need to move on to changing the stylus. You will need the following in order to change your stylus.

Changing Your Stylus

If cleaning didn't help, it is time to change your Ortofon DJ stylus. Before you start, you will need the record styli and a pair of needle-nose pliers.

Step 1: Write down the following from your turntable: model, make and serial number of your turntable. If your stylus cartridge has a separate make and model, write them down. You can find the stylus cartridge on the tone arm where your stylus is connected.

Step 2: Go out and buy the new stylus for your turntable at either an electronics or turntable repair facility. With the serial number, make and model of your turntable, you should have no problem finding the correct stylus at the store.

Step 3: Remove the old stylus. If possible, follow the instructions provided with the new stylus. If it doesn't have any or you don't get it, then here are some simple steps that work with most styluses. Hold the stylus cartridge in one hand and using the needle-nose pliers or a pair of tweezers, grasp the end of the need and gently pull. That's it. It should pop right out.

Step 4: After removing the old stylus, hold the new on from the top and press it gently into the space at the tip of the cartridge. Be careful not to force it or you will be on your way back to the store for another one.

Step 5: Test it on a record and listen to the sound quality. Since it is new, you may have to adjust it slightly to get the best sound.
